That’s my big beating heart! PCS update! this one’s pretty interesting, please read on: After a number of abnormal ECGs and a year of heart related symptoms (heart palpitations, near-fainting, irregular blood pressure and heart rate), I’m finally having a bunch of tests done to get to the bottom of it all. Since my brain injury I most notably had obvious intolerance to anything that increased my heart rate. Over the year as symptoms have been more recognisable and more easily distinguished from one another, it’s become clear that I have some sort of dysfunction. ⠀⠀ ➡️ Yesterday’s echocardiogram was to check the mechanics of heart function to rule out anything sinister with heart structure and mechanical function. Next will be further testing for the electrics and regulation side of heart function. ⠀⠀ 💓 How does this all link to brain injury? So I’ve posted before about nervous system dysfunction- it is highly likely that the brain injury brought on a heightened and overactive nervous system induced by response to trauma and physiological stress, which can cause something called POTS - postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. One of the main features of POTS is that a significantly reduced volume of blood returns to the heart on standing, and therefore any organs above the heart *ie the brain 🧠 * have hugely reduced blood flow and oxygen levels. It can be quite serious and would be a life-long condition, but fortunately can be managed. I’m already doing a lot of things to help - staying healthy and active are right at the top of the list! ⠀⠀ 💡 Remember, not all illnesses and aspects of illness or disability are visible 👀💙 ⠀⠀   #PostConcussionSyndrome     #braininjuryawareness     #PCS     #concussionawareness     #concussion     #braininjuryrecovery     #braininjury     #recovery     #rehabilitation     #mentalhealth     #mentalhealthawareness     #chronicillness     #disability     #accesscentred     #invisibleillness     #chronicpain     #invisibleillnessawareness     #disabilityawareness     #rehab     #physio     #stayactive     #freshairclub     #health     #fitness     #pots     #potssyndrome     #heart     #heartscan     #echocardiogram     #hospital

Greg Stanke's Story by Shannan Stanke Our West Fargo farmstead became the most unsafe place on earth for our family last summer, but we didn't expect the nightmare to end with Greg's suicide. Linebacker for NDSU Bison and the Dragons at MSUM, Greg began his football career in jr high and high school in his hometown, New Prague, MN. After college, Greg trained horses and competed as fiercely in the horse arena as he had in football arenas. An avid hunter and horse rider, he quickly became a Level 4 in Cowboy Mounted Shooting. Difficulties and conflicts came slowly and insidiously over the last few years. On May 5, 2018, Greg was knocked unconscious when he came off his horse running at top speed and hit the ground head first. The months that followed brought turmoil and heart break as we became entangled in a confusing, bizarre nightmare, ending with Greg's suicide on September 11, 2018. Pathology results showed signs of early stage CTE: the stages most associated with personality changes and suicide. Greg’s brain was being assaulted by 2 levels of damage: one recent major head trauma (we suspect several minor ones in the last few years) as well as a degenerative disease that began in his early years. I never knew that the risk of suicide doubles after a concussion and that it is a leading cause of death in early stage CTE. Before Greg died, I had no idea that a person's concussion symptoms could be more emotional than physical. Aside from a couple of headaches and fatigue, Greg's main complaint was that he was "just so frustrated". I thought you could only get CTE if you were in the NFL, and due to lack of knowledge, I didn’t request to have his brain sent to Boston's VA-BU-CLF brain bank. I had the medical examiner send what small samples he routinely retained to UPMC Pittsburgh to search for any signs of damage. Tau protein was found, consistent with early stage CTE, but we would’ve needed the whole brain to get an official diagnosis that would contribute to statistical data. This knowledge about the relationship between concussions and suicide would've given us understanding and the chance to seek treatments. I believe it could have saved Greg.

I’m so grateful for the beautiful winter weather we’ve been having lately, it’s been so nice to get out on the trails every day! I’m working with my physio on getting back into running, I can do one minute running and then 4 minutes walking now without aggravating any symptoms. I’ve really enjoyed slowing it down lately tho and doing lots of walking and hiking. The psychologist has given me some amazing tools and strategies to deal with stress that don’t involve my running shoes so that’s been amazing to learn. Although it’s been a long road to recovery I’m so grateful for the things that the accident has taught me ❤️ . . .   #purenewzealand     #glenorchy     #capturenz     #kiwipics     #gottalovenz     #concussion     #nzmustdo     #newzealandfinds     #nzimagery     #concussionawareness     #nomadict     #concussionrecovery     #niftyfew     #nzblogger     #nzmustsee     #newzealand     #arrowtown     #bestnewzealand     #discoverearth     #hikingtheglobe     #lakewakatipu     #newzealandguide     #destinationnz     #queenstown     #concussionrehab     #southislandnz     #queenstownnz     #queenstownlive     #earthpixnz     #travelnz

What is qEEG brain mapping? • • • It’s a safe, non-invasive procedure that records electrical activity in the brain. The maps show us which brain systems are out of balance, the exact location of those imbalances, and allow us to see dynamic changes in brain function while it’s working. After 36 concussions, you start to wonder if there are any answers for the health challenges you are destined to face. When Chris came in, it was but a dream to get to this point. It doesn’t matter if it is one or if it is 36, after you rule out a skull fracture the next most important step to ensuring you sustain health and no chronic health issues following a concussion is an upper cervical evaluation. It is the difference between a life of disease and a life of Hope.

Brain Injury Awareness 🧠 I recently got cleared to add massage therapy into my recovery 🙌🏻 Although massages are super good for relaxing, after an injury...not so much. I don’t have a lot of trust with anyone touching anything around my neck since my injury. When the surf board hit me, it literally pushed everything into my spine and to the side, not fun. I have worked super hard using multiple therapies to get my neck “straight” again, which is why my doc feels I can add this into my recovery 16 months later 😐 My injury is very specific and intricate and with being face down on a table I needed a therapist who understood concussion, PCS and to be understanding with me that a good relationship is needed in order for trust to be established so that I would actually be able to get my body to relax so the work could be done. I have so many places on my neck that when simply just touched causes a reaction to me wanting to punch you in the face lol I know a lot of my constant daily headaches originate in this area so I’m very excited and hopeful this will help relieve the one symptom that has not changed since the beginning 😔 I have a long way to go in this therapy, my neck is way worse than I thought even being “straight” now but I am thankful I found someone who I can trust and knows what they are doing to get my upper body back to proper function. I am insanely sore but I know this is step 1 and the last step will come in time, I just have to sprinkle more patient dust on my face and keep moving forward.   #keepfuckingfighting     #concussion     #postconcussionsyndrome     #traumaticbraininjury     #nothingmildaboutit     #tbi     #tbiawareness     #braininjury     #braininjuryawareness     #invisibleillness     #invisibleillnessrecovery     #invisibleillnessawareness     #braininjuryrecovery     #braininjurysurvivor     #concussionawareness     #warriorwithin     #roadtorecovery     #patienceisagiftihaveearned     #whiplash     #neckinjury     #whiplashrecovery

PART 2️⃣ - PREVENTION AND REDUCING OF RISK OF CONCUSSION 💥🧠 In our previous post, we have seen how a front impact can result in rotation of the C012 (Atlas/axis) which then has an impact on blood flow to the brain (amongst other things). . How can we prevention this? . The vertebrae of the C-0-1-2 complex provides up to 50 degrees of rotation at the neck, the remaining 40-50 degrees of rotation is provided by the movement of the vertebrae C3-C7. If the athlete's head accelerates due to impact rapidly through and beyond the first 40-50 degrees of rotation, it is likely that the trauma needed to concuss/injure an athlete has ALREADY OCCURRED. It is therefore important that an athlete can; 1) recruit the deep muscles of the neck responsible for the first 50 degree of rotation: Rectus Capitis and Obliquus Capitis muscles (see image) and 2) that the Rectus Capitis and Obliquus Capitis muscles are strong enough to decelerate or prevent the rotation of the head. When you consider that the jaw, acting as part of a type 1 lever (see image) pivoted at the top of the neck, actually extends the length of the lever arm (to around three times longer than the opposite side of the lever) which therefore creates a strong rational force on impact that consequently requires significant strength in the opposing muscle groups to counteract this movement. . Therefore, to prevent this sudden and injurious rotation movement of the neck, our deep muscles of the neck need to: 1) Respond FAST enough to sudden impact 2) Be STRONG enough to absorb the sudden forces. We have designed some specific exercises using the GS Harness to help achieve this! This will be part 3!
